Bio

There was a time when I couldn't swim a length of the pool without stopping for breath, hated the thought of running, and couldn't understand why anyone would want to ride a road bike for any length of time. A year later, I was an Ironman.

It's a life changing event, and it has become a way of life for me.

TriDot has played a big part in my success in Triathlon, so it was natural that I would join them when I qualified as a coach.

I am very fortunate in that my job as an Anaesthetist (Anaesthesiologist in 'Murican!) pays the bills, so coaching is all about passion - I get as much from my athletes as they get from me. If I didn't love it, and didn't feel I was helping my athletes exceed their expectations, I would stop.

For relaxation, when I'm not researching the latest in performance science or analyzing my athletes' data, I can be found trail running or mountain biking through Australia's wilderness.

Background

I was born in South Africa where I studied medicine in the stunning city of Cape Town. I immigrated to the United Kingdom where I specialised in Anaesthesia, and spent 16 years getting rained on, before moving to Australia in search of sunshine and vast open spaces to play in.

I live in Newcastle, New South Wales, where I've discovered a fantastic community of runners, cyclists and triathletes.

I am co-event director for one of our local parkruns (a free, weekly, timed 5km run).

Philosophy

I specialise in data-driven, efficient training, that is optimised for a busy lifestyle; I aim to be a complete coach - from planning individual sessions tailored specifically to my athletes' needs and ability, to nutrition (what should you eat during your general prep phase to promote a fat-burning metabolism? What should you eat and drink immediately after a workout? How about breakfast on race day?), to the psychology of performance and racing. My aim is for you to arrive at your race with a toolbox of skills that will allow you to deal with anything you're faced with.

I have a particular interest in the science and practice of maintaining and even improving performance as we get older.

I work with athletes training for their first 5k run, to athletes facing the grueling 3 days of an UltraMan

My passion is fitness (particularly Long Course Triathlon) as a way of life and a path to continued health and performance no matter how young or old we are
